| German cockroaches | Small roaches in kitchens and baths, droppings, odor | Right away; they breed indoors. |
| Roof rats and mice | Noises at night, droppings, gnaw marks | Right away. See rodent control. |
| Subterranean and drywood termites | Swarmers, mud tubes, pellets, damaged wood | Right away. See termite control. |
| Mosquitoes | Biting around the lanai, standing water in the yard | When source reduction isn't enough. See mosquito service. |
| Bed bugs | Bites after sleeping, spots in mattress seams | Right away. See bed bug treatment. |
| Wasps and yellowjackets | Nests under eaves, ground nests in beds | When nests are near doors or play areas. |
Season matters
Pest activity in Naples rises with summer heat and the rainy season, and termite swarmers are most often noticed in spring and early summer. Seasonal owners often return in the fall to find pests settled in while the home was closed.
Identification first
Many pests look alike. A photo helps, but treatment should be based on a technician's identification. For identification resources, see UF/IFAS Extension publications. For health questions about bites or stings, talk to your doctor.
